Many children in our school are Young Carers. We have set up a network to support these children and our own group, ‘Creative Carers’. We were very excited to be awarded the Caring Together ‘Carer Friendly Tick Award’ in June 2021. We are proud to be supporting our Young Carers.

‘Creative Carers’ is Young Carers club for children at Mile Cross Primary School.
A young carer is someone under 25 whose life is affected by a family member or friend being ill, frail, disable or having mental health or addiction problems.
Young Carers often take on practical or emotional caring responsibilities that other children their age do not have. We want to make sure these children know that there are people to talk to in school who understand and give them some extra quality time to have fun with friends.
The club is run by Mrs Oldfield (Parent Support Advisor), Mrs Tufts (Teaching Assistant and Forest School Lead) and Miss Hubble (SENDCO & DSL). Ali McClagish regularly volunteers with the club. Ally has regularly run Young Carer Day Trips through the local community hub, The Phoenix Centre.
Children are invited to attend our free ‘Creative Carers’ club which runs on Thursday after school. Different year groups attend on different weeks.
We might do some crafts activities, play board games, read books, do some simple cookery, play games outside. We encourage the children to come up with their own ideas. Children can talk to the club leaders about any worries that they might have.
Young Carers do not have to come to the club when they are invited. They are still identified as Young Carers in our school records so that staff are aware. They will always have someone to talk to if they have any worries or just want a listening ear.
Please contact the school office by phone or email.
Tel: 01603 425186 Email: office@milecrossprimary.norfolk.sch.uk if you would like your child’s name to be added to the list, or if you would like to find out more.
We welcome your ideas to grow and improve our club so we can better support our Young Carers
What do some of our Young Carers say about what the group means to them ?
”If you are feeling depressed and anxious you have trustworthy adult to talk to. You have something to look forward to. You can make new friends. (And much more)”
It gives me something to look forward to. It is fun and good to be yourself. you have a trusted adult to talk to. It is very, very, very good. It helps Young Carers to relax. You get lots of help in times of stress. You get freedom. Lessens stress.
I like the Young Carers group because it’s fun, meet up with friends, make things and enjoy time away from home. I like the support from the teachers and the activities.
